How to Reset a Hikvision DVR or NVR Admin Password

Forgot your Hikvision DVR or NVR admin password? This guide shows you the safest and most common methods to reset it without losing your recordings.

Method 1: Security Questions (Recommended)

If you set up security questions during initial setup:

  1. On the login screen, click Forgot Password
  2. Select Security Questions
  3. Answer all 3 security questions correctly
  4. You will be prompted to set a new password

Method 2: SADP Tool (via Computer on Same Network)

  1. Download the SADP Tool from the Hikvision website
  2. Connect your PC to the same network as the DVR/NVR
  3. Open SADP – it will auto-detect the device
  4. Select the device and click Forgot Password
  5. Export the XML file and send it to your supplier or Hikvision support for a reset code
  6. Enter the reset code to unlock the device

Method 3: Reset via QR Code (Newer Models)

  1. On the login screen, click Forgot Password
  2. Select Verification Code
  3. A QR code will appear on screen
  4. Scan the QR code with the Hik-Connect app
  5. Follow the app instructions to receive a reset code
  6. Enter the code on the DVR/NVR to reset your password

Method 4: Hard Reset (Last Resort – Erases All Settings)

⚠️ Warning: This will erase all settings including camera configurations and user accounts. Recordings on the HDD are NOT deleted.

  1. Power off the DVR/NVR
  2. Locate the RESET button (usually a small hole or button on the back panel)
  3. Hold the reset button while powering on
  4. Hold for 10–15 seconds until the system restarts
  5. The device will return to factory default settings

Tips to Avoid Getting Locked Out

  • Always record your admin password in a safe place
  • Set up security questions during initial setup
  • Register the device on Hik-Connect for easy password recovery
