How to Set Up Your Hikvision DVR for the First Time
Setting up a Hikvision DVR for the first time is straightforward. Follow this step-by-step guide to get your CCTV system running quickly.
What You Need
- Hikvision DVR unit
- Hard disk drive (HDD) – recommended 1TB or above
- CCTV cameras (TVI/AHD/CVI/CVBS)
- Monitor (HDMI or VGA)
- Mouse (USB)
- Network cable (if remote viewing required)
Step 1: Install the Hard Disk
Before powering on, open the DVR cover and install the HDD. Connect the SATA data cable and power cable to the HDD. Secure the HDD with screws and close the cover.
Step 2: Connect Cameras
Connect your CCTV cameras to the BNC ports on the back of the DVR. Ensure each camera has a 12V DC power supply connected.
Step 3: Power On & Startup Wizard
Connect the DVR to your monitor via HDMI or VGA. Power on the unit. The Startup Wizard will launch automatically. Follow the on-screen steps to:
- Set your language and timezone (select Kuala Lumpur GMT+8)
- Create an admin password (minimum 8 characters, mix letters and numbers)
- Set up date and time
Step 4: Format the Hard Disk
Go to Main Menu > Storage > Storage Management. Select your HDD and click Format. Wait for the format to complete. The DVR will now begin recording automatically.
Step 5: Configure Recording Schedule
Go to Main Menu > Storage > Schedule. Set your preferred recording mode:
- Continuous – records 24/7
- Motion – records only when motion is detected
- Alarm – records on alarm trigger
Step 6: Connect to Network
Go to Main Menu > Configuration > Network. Set a static IP or enable DHCP. Note down the device serial number for Hik-Connect remote viewing setup.
