How to Set Up Hikvision NVR for the First Time
This guide walks you through the initial setup of a Hikvision NVR (Network Video Recorder) for IP camera surveillance.
What You Need
- Hikvision NVR unit
- Hard disk drive (HDD) – recommended 2TB or above for IP cameras
- Hikvision IP cameras
- Network switch (PoE switch recommended)
- Monitor (HDMI or VGA)
- Mouse (USB)
Step 1: Install HDD
Open the NVR cover and install the HDD. Connect SATA data and power cables. Secure with screws and close the cover.
Step 2: Power On & Startup Wizard
Connect monitor and power on the NVR. The Startup Wizard will appear. Configure:
- Admin password (at least 8 characters)
- Date, time and timezone (GMT+8 Kuala Lumpur)
- Network settings (DHCP or static IP)
Step 3: Format the HDD
Navigate to Main Menu > Storage > Storage Management. Select the HDD and click Format.
Step 4: Add IP Cameras
There are two methods to add cameras:
- Auto Add: Go to Main Menu > Camera > Camera. Click Refresh. The NVR will auto-detect cameras on the same network. Select and click Add.
- Manual Add: Click Add, enter the camera IP address, username and password (default: admin/admin12345).
Step 5: Activate Cameras (if new)
New Hikvision IP cameras require activation before use. Go to Main Menu > Camera > Camera, select the inactive camera and set a new password.
Step 6: Set Recording Schedule
Go to Main Menu > Storage > Schedule. Choose continuous, motion detection or alarm-triggered recording per channel.
Step 7: Enable Hik-Connect
Go to Main Menu > Configuration > Network > Platform Access. Enable Hik-Connect and note the verification code for mobile app setup.
